Information About Sam - Harrogate tutor
This is how 2 referees rated Sam:
I am a friendly, academic sort of person. I enjoy discussing big ideas and trying to relate them to everyday life. I have a young family and this spurs me on everyday to become a better teacher and a better person.
I have been teaching now for 6 years, and tutoring for 7. Although my primary subject has always been Psychology, I am also experienced at teaching other subjects, including Sociology (GCSE and A Level), English (KS3), EPQ (A Level) and assorted others.
I began my teaching during my training in Leicester before teaching in London for several years at a struggling academy. For the last two years I have been teaching at Harrogate Grammar School, a non-selective school with excellent grades. Last year, over 60% of my Psychology students achieved at least a B grade.
Alongside this, I have had many tutees. This includes 1:1 and small group sessions. I have mostly tutored in Psychology but I have also tutored Maths at KS2 and English as a second language to adult learners.
I believe that a tutor should be someone who can fulfill two basic roles: a) clarify and consolidate material learnt in lessons, and b) embed thorough and personally-tailored exam techniques.
My approach to tutoring fulfills these roles by offering engaging starter activities, step-by-step explanations of material, and lots of assessed work. My personal favourite task to do at the end of a topic is to go through an exam paper, line by line, and have my students actually answer the questions in front of me, followed by analysis of the mark scheme and targeted improvements on what has been written.
I like to combine lesson resources with my own personal advice to achieve the best for my students.
