This is how 2 referees rated Sam:
Composer, pianist, accompanist & teacher. I teach piano up to grade 8, music theory/history, and composition.
In 2010, I graduated with a 1st in English Literature/Music from Canterbury Church University, and went on to complete a Masters in Music (Composition) - awarded with merit - the following year, also at CCCU. I also hold Grade 8 Piano & Grade 5 Theory (ABRSM) qualifications.
Since 2010 I have been teaching a number of students both privately and via placement with a local music school. During this time I have taught students of all abilities, from young children to retired adults.
As a composer, my work has been performed by the Canterbury Church University Symphony Orchestra, London New Wind Festival Ensemble and a number of bespoke ensembles and soloists. As a performer, I have performed in an ensemble setting with Canterbury Orchestra, CoMA London and CCCU Scratch Orchestra. Recent performances have also included duo work with the violinist Kammy Pike, as well as numerous engagements as accompanist.
I believe that a strong theoretical basis is essential in understanding music. However, in my teaching I always look to demonstrate these theoretical principles with practical examples. When teaching piano, I place a strong emphasis upon good technique to create 'good habits' and to further expression.
A typical piano lesson would include (from the following): scales and/or technical exercises, pieces, and various aural/musical awareness exercises.
A typical theory lesson would include (from the following): introduction of key concepts for the lesson, study of a short piece/musical extract, aural/musical awareness exercises, setting of further study/work.
