Personal Description:

I have taught maths and science whilst training for the secondary PGCE teaching qualification in Physics with Maths from Sep`15 to Feb`16. I stopped after my first school placement because I found that teachers have to do too many things without the time to do them which conflicts with my personality. I am a very patient person and enjoy helping people learn new skills. I also coach and play table tennis and chess.

Tutoring Experience:

I taught in the maths and science departments at a secondary school in Oxted whilst training for the PGCE teaching qualification at the Institute of Education, part of UCL.
I worked for two years in the special educational needs department as a teaching assistant and taught an AS-level physics class at a secondary school in Croydon.
I have over 600 hours 1-1 tutoring experience.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that learning happens when you are challenged and have to struggle to find an answer, so I help students to work out problems for themselves, providing appropriate scaffolding and questioning to guide the student in the right direction and lead them through key concepts. Whilst on my teacher training course I was consistently told that my questioning is excellent, my explanations are very clear and that I have a very calm, warm and patient disposition.

I also believe students should be shown why what they are learning is relevant to them. As a student and in my years working in schools I know that sadly many students are uninterested or completely disengaged as a result of teachers just delivering the subject content as it is or with recycled, outdated context. I motivate my students with relevant real life context to make learning interesting and even enjoyable for teenagers!
