Highly experienced primary teacher specialising in specific maths difficulties. I am passionate about helping children reach their potential and overcome barriers to their learning. I work to support a child's confidence, enjoyment and overall academic development. I can support children with specific numeracy difficulties. This is sometimes called Dyscalculia. Currently I am entering into post-graduate research and specialisation in numeracy and learning. I am a working mum with a full house, including both cats and dogs!
I have more than 25 years classroom and intervention teaching experience across the whole primary age range. This includes Year 2 and Year 6 SATs preparation, Year 1 Phonics Screening, Verbal and Non-verbal Reasoning. I teach all primary subjects and specialise in numeracy support. I have been a Deputy Headteacher (NPQH) for a number of years in a successful primary school and have led on many subjects including supporting Gifted and Talented pupils. Through my senior leadership roles I have developed good insight into requirements for academic progress and the spectrum of abilities.
It is clear from research that involving appropriate enjoyable learning activities improves development significantly. As a trained numeracy specialist, both Numbers Count (Edgehill University) and Dyscalculia (BDA) I provide intensive programmes to accelerate mathematical progress. My lessons are designed to be engaging, active and multi-sensory. I start from what a child can do, rather than what they cannot do. I believe in providing children with the practical experiences that help them develop reliable cognitive models and do this through using concrete manipulatives, visual models, targeted activities and a sensitive balance between recap and next steps.
