I am a PhD student at Imperial College London that has been tutoring A level and GCSE Maths for the past 7 years
I began tutoring after helping out as a volunteer at an A level and GCSE revision course in April 2007. Since then, I have tutored students privately and worked as the A level maths tutor at the Husseini Tuition Centre in Stanmore.
Many of the students that i have tutored have developed key understanding of the subject at hand, and have also gone on to tutor part time whilst studying at university.
I have organised week long residential courses across England during the Easter holidays in the past couple of years, focussing on past paper practice and exam technique, as well as teaching at the courses.
I personally find that either one to one or small **Contact Detail Removed** to be the most effective method of learning.
My aim is to teach a student how to understand the subject at hand rather than just how to answer a question. Mathematics is a subject that requires understanding and practice, rather than memorisation.
I find that 90 minute sessions provide the perfect amount of time for effective learning - one hour is too short, and two hours is slightly too strenuous on the mind. Within 90 minutes, i have seen that students can absorb and understand key information, practice questions, and feel confident in a subject once the time is up.
I will set homework which i expect to be completed, because repetition is just as important as understanding, if not more, when it comes to mathematics.
