Media / Communication Studies
Hello there! I am a 21 year old second year Newcastle University student currently completing a degree in Media with English Literature.I currently live in the city.
I am originally from Wakefield, West Yorkshire and attended Kettlethorpe High School where I achieved 12 GCSEs (A*s and As). I completed my A-Levels at Greenhead College which was awarded best 6th form college in England in 2014. My A-Levels were an A* in Religious Studies, A in Medieval History and a B in English Combined.
I am thoroughly enjoying the University experience and currently hold a voluntary position with Newcastle University Students' Union as the Marginalised Genders Officer. I am also on the committee for two societies: Film-Soc and the Mind the Gap mental health society. I am a hard worker, with the ability to work independently with little guidance. My current grade average is a strong 2:1.
My hobbies include film-making (I make YouTube videos), watching horror films, film photography, freelance journalism, attending art galleries, passionate social activist for mental illness and LGBTQIA* issues.
At University I was a Student Ambassador from 2013-2015. One central responsibility of this job was visiting schools across the country and running classes on basic understanding of university life, studies and features of Newcastle University. At one point I had the responsibility of over 30 students aged 14-16.
As an avid filmmaker who enjoys making short films, campaign videos and video blogs - I have previously sat down with friends and acquaintances and taken them through the basics of Adobe Premiere Elements 11 to enable them to utilise the full extent of the software.
I also working in social media marketing in my spare time on a voluntary basis for University societies. I have designed logos and graphic designs on Adobe Photoshop CS6. I have given tutorials to individuals who needed more guidance on how to use the software. One example of this is with my secondary school IT teacher, who I sat with and guided him through the tools required to edit photographs and design logos.
In secondary school I completed a qualification in physical education where we visited local primary schools and ran sports sessions. We also hosted an 'Olympic Day' at the local park where we made the local news.
My approach to teaching completely the depends on the individual I will be tutoring. Generally, when teaching others I like to initially provide a broader context of the subject at hand, and outline any important secondary reading that may apply to the topic at hand.
With degree level English Literature and Media, the work is based around choosing a broad topic or essay questioning and choosing a specific tree of knowledge to hone in on. I will help aid my students in being able to gather multiple diverse sources supporting and critiquing the question.
Secondary school level English Literature and Media, from my own experience, usually involve specific individual texts and interpretations of said text. I want to open my students' minds, to think outside the box and approach questions in a unique sophisticated style in order to achieve the highest grades. In creative writing tasks (of which I have extensive experience of) I want to introduce my students to highly stylised writing techniques which I have encountered during my completion of an independent poetry module. I will complete activities which will open the creative outlets of my students and get them feeling excited and passionate about writing creatively.
