Personal Description:

I am a bright, confident individual and am about to graduate from the Bachelor of Music (Honours) Programme at Edinburgh Napier University. I am in the process of making a name for myself as a professional clarinettist as well as begin teaching clarinet. I am a highly driven person and I have a deep passion for music, both as a performer and a teacher. I perform regularly as a soloist and with ensembles, and have a wealth of experience in many genres of music.

Tutoring Experience:

I have over ten years of experience playing clarinet including orchestral, ensemble and solo performance. I have recorded music for clarinet and piano, and have produced several recordings for my peers at university, so I have a very good ear and attention to detail - vital when teaching clarinet.

I have had four years of university standard musical tuition, including harmony, counterpoint, history of music, music analysis and composition, and as such can offer tuition for ABRSM/Trinity exams in both clarinet performance and music theory, as well as school exams and preparation for further education at college/university.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe in a performance-led teaching method where the pupil will benefit most from my experience. In my lessons the pupil will play a lot so that I can hear exactly what they are doing, and help them to improve. I use duets and other pieces to keep lessons fun, and I encourage sight reading and scale practice from an early stage.

I can adapt my style to suit every pupil; I will make lessons fun and light for someone who wants to learn casually, and will push someone who wants to go further in music.

The most important thing to me is that the pupil is enjoying playing clarinet, and that they are learning the right things from me. In a beginner I can build a solid technique, teach them all about the history of the clarinet and the music written for it, how the instrument works, and develop their playing as far as they are willing to push themselves. For a pupil who already has some experience I will impart further knowledge and steer them in the right direction.
