Personal Description:

I am in my second year at the University of York, studying Music. I gained a 1st in my first year, and prior to this I gained an A* in Music at A-Level on the Edexcel syllabus. I play the Harp (Grade 8 Distinction), Clarinet, Saxophone (Grade 8), and Piano (Grade 7) and have a good understanding of harmony: I have studied Bach Chorales for A-Level and at University in detail. I love composition, and have a passion for both discovering and creating new works. This has led me to enter and win various competitions: the Wales International Harp Festival Composition Competition as well as the Leamington Spa Harp Festival Competition.
I am passionate about music and believe it is such an important skill to learn.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been an instrumental teacher to three pupils who have each recently gained their Distinction at Grade 1. This teaching was for the clarinet and for the harp. I also have taken part in workshops within primary schools as part of the University of York's Music in Education Group. I have experience as a solo and ensemble performer, composer, and have a knowledge of music theory and history through my studies.

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that every student has the ability to excel in Music, and tailor teaching very closely to the individual. Depending upon the individual student's amount of experience with music, and what they would like to improve upon, the lessons may take different forms. For example: for harmony work, I create exercises which I can provide to the students prior to and/or within the class and then give feedback upon for improvement. I believe that music should be fun so these are often tailored to the pupil! (e.g. chorales to the tune of pop songs). Focused, clear work alongside discussion is what I find the best way to learn. Whatever your interest: classical, jazz, or folk, music should be personalised and engaging.
