Hello! I am Ross! I have a PhD in Mathematics (University of Bristol, 2014), and an MSci in Mathematics and Physics (University of Bristol, 2010). I am also a professional scientist with several published research articles, having spent 2 years living in New York as a scientific researcher, and am now in the civil service. I am a professional mathematician, and a member of the institute for mathematics and it's applications.
At heart, I am a creative, and science is really a creative pursuit in the end. Mathematics is (to me) simply the language in which science is expressed, and I love helping people to see the beauty and simplicity in mathematics.
In my spare time, I like to play board games and card games (like Magic!), as well as playing music, and recently have become involved in amateur village panto!
I think that I would be an ideal tutor for someone who wants to go study maths or science at university. Or someone who is already a university student!
As well as maths and physics, I am also a competent (albeit self-taught) programmer (Python, Matlab, Java, HTML/CSS) and am happy to tutor adult learners in this.
During my PhD, I had 4 years of experience teaching small groups of first year university mathematics students. I gave replacement lectures on occasion. I also have some experience of private one-on-one tutoring of science students taking A-Level replacement courses at university.
Conceptual understanding is the key to being a good mathematician. Developing this in a way that also elucidates the beauty of the underlying ideas breeds excitement to learn new concepts and apply them to problem solving. Plenty of practise is then used simply to hone understanding and retain memory of concepts.
I believe this approach is a good complement to the rote learning approach typically applied in our schools, and adds a deeper interest to the subject.
