I am a creative and committed English graduate with several years of tutoring and teaching experience. I have recently moved to Glasgow from Newcastle upon Tyne, where I lived for several years after competing my degree, although I am originally from West Yorkshire. I have been passionate about the study of English Language and Literature since I was young, when I was introduced to literature through the works of Philip Pullman, CS Lewis and JRR Tolkien. Since then I have grown to love a whole host of authors from all around the world, and to appreciate writing from all different genres. At university I developed a keen interest in linguistics and greatly enjoyed the technical study of language, which I have continued to study ever since. Outside of my academic interests, my passions lie in travel, yoga, hiking and painting. I recently travelled around Scandinavia by myself, which was a truly transformative experience, and I am looking forward to undertaking similar trips in the future.
During my time at university I worked for Explore Learning, a tutoring centre that provides English and Mathematics tuition for children aged between 5 and 16. I worked with children both in groups and on a one to one basis, helping them to strengthen their English and Maths skills, as well as building confidence and pride in their work. I also worked as a private tutor for two years and as a teaching assistant for one year, helping students from a range of academic backgrounds to achieve their desired results in English Literature and Language. I worked with a GCSE student who was predicted a D but needed a B in order to progress into the sixth form, and together we built on her skills and confidence so that she did achieve that B. I also worked with an A Level English student who needed to achieve an A grade in order to get into her first choice of university, and after several months of one to one sessions she took her exams and achieved an A. It is experiences like these that make tutoring a truly worthwhile profession for me, and which make all of the hard work pay off for my students.
I take a collaborative approach to teaching, working alongside my students in a relaxed yet structured environment that helps them to feel comfortable and confident. My students always have the opportunity to direct their own learning and to build on the skills that they believe they need to strengthen. I am happy to communicate with school teachers about the specific areas that should be worked on if the student feels that this would be helpful, and I personally find this approach to be very beneficial. I often ask students to complete tasks between sessions that can then be emailed to me for feedback, and I am willing to proofread and edit students' essays. Any existing work that the student requires help with can be brought to a session for us to work on together, and I also offer coaching on exam techniques such as planning methods, learning quotations and proofreading. Although I am currently unable to tutor from my own home, I can travel either to my student's home or to a public library, whichever is preferable. Alternatively, I can provide online tuition via Skype or another channel at a discounted price.
