I teach English Language and Literature to students aged nine to nineteen. I tutor students for their entrance examinations (11 +, 13+, sixth form and university admissions) and I teach GCSE, A Level and IB English Language and Literature.

I tutor students through university admissions more generally. Sometimes I take students through the entire process, at other times I help with parts of it such as the personal statement and interview practice.

For English Literature, I cover texts from Chaucer to the present day. I also encourage reading books in translation.

I am interested in all kinds of literature. For English literature I take an interest (especially not exclusively) in the poetry of the Tudor Court, Shakespeare, Sir Thomas Browne, Edith Sitwell, 20th and 21st Century British, Irish and American poetry.

I read English at Downing College, Cambridge where I wrote two first class dissertations on the poetry of Alfred Lord Tennyson and on nineteenth-century utopias.

Tutoring Experience

I have taught English Language and Literature for ten years. I have worked as a student mentor on international summer schools, a private tutor and as an English teacher.

I have tutored a number of students through their applications to Oxbridge, all of whom have been successful in securing a place.

Tutoring Approach

When it comes to examinations, I teach students to achieve the highest grade they can. For English Literature, students learn how to conduct literary analysis at a high level and to think seriously and in depth about the social/historical/political contexts surrounding the books they read. I encourage my students to read widely, beyond their school curriculum. I find this approach leads to the best results in examinations and to a lasting appreciation of literature.

For English Language, my lessons are primarily exam-focused. I teach students to think critically and to write strong essays. For students who want to do really well, I encourage (and supply) additional reading.
