Information About Ron - Renfrew tutor
This is how 3 referees rated Ron:
I was born and brought up in the small, coastal village of Findochty in the North East of Scotland. I began fiddle and violin lessons from a young age in Primary School and during my teenage years I received tuition from Donald Barr who influenced me greatly. It was during this time that I also learned to play the piano. In my early years with Donald, I broadened my knowledge of Scottish fiddle music with the Strathspey fiddlers. Travelling with the group I performed in many situations as a solo and group performer throughout the UK, Germany and Texas.
After moving to Glasgow to study at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama (now the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland) I found myself in high demand with function and ceilidh bands all over the central belt. During my time at the RCS, I began to play the guitar and since then I have become an accomplished fiddle, guitar and piano player and I am currently pursuing a variety of musical projects.
As a graduate of the RCS, I am now performing all over Scotland for ceilidhs, weddings, workshops and corporate & private entertainment. In October 2011, I was one of only 8 finalists to be invited to the prestigious Glenfiddich Fiddle Championship in Blair Castle and I was invited to perform in the Highlands & Islands Fiddle Masters in Oban in March 2012.
Instrumental teaching: I am currently a tutor at the North Ayrshire Fiddle Workshop where I teach every Thursday evening. I have a Junior Intermediate class and a Senior Intermediate class. I teach guitar every Friday afternoon for Edinburgh Council as part of the YMI funded ‘Sounds Like Friday’ Music project and violin every Saturday for ‘Sounds Like Saturday’.
I have taught (and continue to as a dep.) for Glasgow Fiddle Workshop. Through my time at GFW I have taught adult; beginners, intermediate and advanced levels.
I have recently been offered a role as a deputy tutor for fiddle, guitar and group work sessions for the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland’s Musicworks programme.
My method, whilst firm is always relaxed, fun and creative. I strive to bring out the best in my students; musically, stylistically and technically. My aim is to nurture and encourage their natural creativity.
