WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR?
Are you a geology student preparing for exams or the next level, such as A Levels or university, or want to retain your knowledge while your school or college is closed? Perhaps you are an existing undergraduate or geologist looking to increase your understanding of a specific subject or explore career options? Or have you always found geology interesting but never had the time or support to explore the subject further?
I have worked with all such individuals and the combination of my knowledge and approachable teaching style may be exactly what you require. I am happy to explore your goals and needs during a FREE introductory lesson, so please get in touch to discuss! I have an Enhanced DBS, which is available to view on request.
I am a professional geological consultant, chartered geologist (CGeol) and Fellow of the Geological Society of London, with 34 years in the oil and gas industry. I have experience of working on many geological provinces and living in several different cultures and countries. My employers have included BP and BG (formerly British Gas) and my pet subjects include stratigraphy, geochemistry, and basin analysis. I have tutored and taught classes on geology and geophysics throughout my career, as well as mentoring children and early career professionals on geoscience, life skills and career guidance. My community outreach has included geology and role model talks to primary and secondary schools.
I gained a 2:1 BSc degree from Durham University and the course covered all aspects of geology and geophysics, including field geology and mapping. My interest in geology is driven by curiosity and I have kept my knowledge up to date through extensive on the job training, specialist training courses, and attending geology society meetings and conferences.
I live in East London and I am able to travel to clients, although limited to online working for the duration of the Covid epidemic. My other interests include languages, sports and fitness, and making music.
I have gained formal teaching experience through my CertTESOL course and through preparing and teaching work-related courses to colleagues (20 years). I also have over 30 years of informal teaching experience through mentoring and tutoring junior staff in the workplace and through a community mentoring programme in North London.
My approach to tutoring is to make it fun and interesting, which encourages you to learn and to remember. I identify your learning needs with you and tailor my approach to suit them.
I put emphasis on equipping you with the foundational tools and rules to develop your learning further yourself, instead of just learning by rote. I use a range of visual and aural cues to suit your learning styles, as well as analogues and analogies to illustrate and reinforce.
