Personal Description:

I am a Dyslexia and Autism specialist from Maidstone, Kent. I have worked in the area of Special Needs all my professional life, having been inspired to work in this area after a placement year assisting at a Pupil Referral Unit. In my spare time I enjoy playing music and sport and this is often a good ice breaker when working with students.

Tutoring Experience:

Throught my professional career I have worked in many different and challenging roles. My first role after qualifying as a teacher was head of autism in a underperforming school. I was part of the team who helped bring it out of Special measures by changing the approach to teaching students with autism. From here I moved onto an outstanding comprehensive school in Maidstone in the role of SENCO. During my time here I worked alongside one of the UK's leading specialists and researchers for special needs. My responsibilities included managing special needs across the school, specialist tutoring to help students with Autism and Dyslexia overcome their difficulties and supporting the transition of students with special needs from primary to secondary education. Presently I am working at a renowned Kent special needs school, working with students with a range of complex needs teaching History and Geography as well as leading on innovation through research with Christchurch University.
I am a qualified THRASS (Teaching Handwriting Reading and Spelling Skills) instructor since 2013 as well as having numerous amounts of training in all areas of SEN through my current role.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring works on the basis of building positive working relationships with students. Getting the know the students likes, dislikes, triggers and motivators enables me to tailor the tasks that need completing in a way that students want to complete them. It also enables me to use appropriate reward systems to engage the student in tasks that they may not be as keen to complete.
