Personal Description:

After a 20+ year career in software development and IT project management, I retrained to become a maths teacher and now work full-time as a specialist teacher of GCSE maths. My background outside of education means that I know very well what maths skills are required in the work place and have been commended on my ability to make maths more accessible and understandable to those who struggle with the subject at school. I teach GCSE maths on a full-time basis to mostly to 16-18 year old college students, but also sometimes teach GCSE maths booster classes in schools to year 10 and 11 students. I have a detailed knowledge of the GCSE maths specifications for Edexcel, AQA and OCR and have successfully helped private tutees to improve by one or even two grade points.

Tutoring Experience:

Teaching of GCSE mathematics at foundation and higher tiers full-time since 2011.
Private maths tutoring since 2013
Freelance maths trainer since 2014. In this role, I go into schools (during school holidays) and deliver short GCSE maths holiday booster classes. These are often grade D to C courses, but can sometimes be grade B to A courses.
Teaching of English as a Foreign Language both in the UK and overseas between 2009 and 2011.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is very much student-led. When we meet, we'll talk about what your aims and hopes are for the short to medium term and want you want to get out of being tutored. I'll then conduct an assessment to give us both a good idea of your current strengths and areas requiring development, and then I'll suggest a programme that I think is appropriate to your needs.
Once the tutoring has started, I'm happy for it to work in a way that best meets your needs. This could be working in parallel with your school lessons to reinforce and embed what you're studying at the time; it could be going over past topics where you've got lost or fallen behind; it could be working on exam technique and analysing questions.
Tutoring work best when there is good communication between tutor and student so if you ever need to make changes to the programme, just talk to me and I'll take care of it.
