Personal Description:

After working in an independent school 2004-2011, I moved to teach in international schools in Asia ( 2011-2015). I have been teaching secondary GCSE and A level English in the independent (and currently the maintained) sector from my return until the present.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been qualified as an English teacher for the last 14 years and have been a professional classroom teacher for fifteen years. I have also lectured in two Northern universities. My track record of results across a broad range of students, (all working at different ability levels) is excellent at both GCSE and A level. (I also hold a 'teaching English language as an additional language in mainstream classrooms' qualification, (which has proven helpful to students for whom English is not their native language).

Tutoring Approach:

I believe that a good tutor should model success criteria and should gradually allow students to replicate good practice in order to achieve highly in the shortest time. Where difficulties present themselves, a good tutoring technique is to 'chunk the challenge' i.e break down everything into its component parts. Once achieved, the tutee can take increasingly bigger steps to answer independently. There needs to be some fun within English tutorials, i.e. attempts to bring the study of language alive, so that it is a pleasure for both parties to work towards the learning objective. My style differs between subjects but the common ground is that the tutee needs to be engaged in the work in order to take ownership of it. I will do whatever I can to help that engagement.
