Robert

I have a doctorate in Ancient History and my lifelong passion for the subject is matched by my enthusiasm for passing on that passion to students. My aim is to inculcate in my students a deep understanding and confidence in answering exam questions. My approach is founded on the idea that learning happens most effectively in an environment of mutual respect in which students are encouraged to think and explore new approaches to historical questions, while maintaining focus on maximising examination scores.

Tutoring Experience

I started as a private tutor in 2011 while working towards my PhD. In addition I have taught at Birkbeck University of London. As well as my duties teaching in the history department, I also taught courses on undergraduate study skills which covered areas including Lectures, Seminars and Note-Taking; Historical Sources; Essay writing; Exam preparation and a Practice Exam under exam conditions. The study skills course was very popular with new students, and the feedback I got from my class was very gratifying. One student went as far as to comment: "Robert is a Rock Star!" While my teaching was designed for undergraduates, there is a great deal that can be applied to both GCSE and A-level students.

Tutoring Approach

I am very keen to encourage students to revise effectively, and to this end communicate strategies that they can employ which will give them confidence on the day of their exam. Where students work hard, and revise in a smart manner they should enter the exam hall with the knowledge that they can answer questions with confidence and without fear.
