History Of Art
With fifteen years experience tutoring, I am a Masters graduate from St Andrews (English & Art History) with a teaching qualification from L.S.E. Known by my middle name Rob (to avoid any confusion on the reviews below) I am a fun and engaging tutor. I work hard to tailor lessons to suit the needs of every individual and have yet to see a student not exceed expectations.
I first started teaching at school. Having grown up in Argentina, I returned in 1992 fluent in Spanish and assisted teachers with Spanish teaching whilst still a pupil. When I left school I continued helping pupils in Spanish, also starting Drama lessons and workshops, something I have kept doing voluntarily since 1998 to the present day whenever I return to my native West Cumbria.
Just after the handover, I spent a year in Hong Kong teaching EFL to mainstream children and also had the opportunity to tutor a couple of children who had been detained in a detention centre having been misled into triad gangs. Teaching these children Spanish (they were due to go on an 'exchange' to Chile) with no common language was a challenging and eye opening experience and taught me the benefits of a flexible and adaptable approach.
I returned to study for my degree between 2000-2004 taking further subsidiary courses in Spanish & Classics and studying for a TEFL. I then attended Drama School at The Guildford School of Acting receiving the straight actor's award and a Performance Diploma.
Since leaving, I have taught English (Literature, Language & as a Foreign Language), Art History, Drama, Spanish, Photography, Film, Art & Maths to a great many students of all ages (adults included), abilities (I have worked in learning and behavioural difficulties schools) and backgrounds and thrive in this need to adapt lessons for different individual's needs.
I currently teach a vast range of pupils of all ages and nationalities in East Sussex and in London. I am particularly proud to have assisted pupils with learning difficulties achieve higher grades although I am equally passionate and intrigued to work with pupils of all backgrounds and abilities and to nurture in my tutees a passion towards their subjects and more than often see them jump two or three grades at least.
A trained actor, I currently work extensively on stage and screen. I also work with Doctors, Educational Psychologists, Mental Health Nurses and War Veterans in Medical and Army roleplays whilst devising and conducting private tours of London. Beyond this, I have a keen interest in sports, music, reading, walking and a near obsession with growing my own vegetables. A Cumbrian country fanatic, I have a huge love for all rural life, fudge and dog walking.
Re: Prices. I do offer certain deals for 90 minute lessons and/or for pupils who are very local so feel free to ask, it won't cause offence!
Lastly, I was christened John Robert and unfortunately the website will only use my first name on my profile. To avoid any future confusion, I am known as Rob and I very much look forward to hearing from you!

My 'approach' to tutoring will always be initially to consider the tutee's approach to learning. I believe one to one private tuition requires a tutor who can adapt to the needs of the pupil. I would wish to meet the pupil initially to establish how they may best be assisted and what the pupil's key areas of concern are. In short, each mind, young or old, needs different approaches and I believe my strongest ability is an adaptability to meet the varying needs and requirements of every student as generally, this is why they tend to be looking for tuition beyond their school curriculum.
My approach, in terms of academic structure, in most cases would be to follow a curriculum but to have the flexibility to pause where things need shoring up and to build my pupil's confidence in preparation for exams.
I tend to use past papers when it comes to exam based tuition as this is ultimately what they will be faced with come exam time! However, when I have a pupil for longer there is more scope for harnessing a broader interest in a subject or often simply assisting with difficult homework.
With each of my previous pupils I have needed and been able to assist them in a way that is individually appealing to them and I have never had a pupil who has not achieved their desired results.
