This is how 2 referees rated Richard:
I am a first year PhD student in English Literature and English Education, sponsored by the Midlands3Cities consortium. I began my higher education in Sociology and History, before moving on to do a literature-based MA in Victorian Studies in Leeds.
Most of my teaching experience has been in ad hoc tutoring to colleagues on the various courses I have done. I found this an immensely satisfying experience, and some of my friends have done well at the end of it all. I feel that my strengths lie in helping people to get ideas ordered and clarified in their minds, so that they can write about them in a coherent fashion. I tend to excel when I am working on a one to one basis with people, and I find that I am patient and sympathetic when we have to deal with challenging tasks.
I am also experienced at writing essays and extended pieces of written work, as well as editing and helping other people's work. *I would be especially interested to hear from people requiring assistance with coursework and essay writing.*
I prefer tutees to come to me with specific assignments which they require help with, as this then starts the process of learning in a meaningful fashion. I will then encourage dialogue regarding the piece(s) of work, offering pointers as to how to improve the piece, as well as trying to help the tutee order their ideas for themselves.
