Information About Richard - Heathfield tutor
This is how 2 referees rated Richard:
I have recently semi-retired to East Sussex. I continue to teach part-time and am an A level examiner with OCR. I also lecture on English Literature A Level for Sovereign Education. Through my tutoring, I am familiar with all the boards at GCSE and A level. I can provide references at both levels. English is a bit of passion in my family. I taught both my children English at A level and both went on to read English at University (Oxford and St. Andrews). My son is currently studying for an MPhil in English and is a book reviewer for The Times and The Times Literary Supplement. We have a separate venture together writing A level teaching materials. My daughter also tutors in English through Tutor First.
I have spent most of my professional life as a Head of English, first at Wycombe Abbey School, then at the Kings School Tynemouth before becoming an Assistant Head Teacher. I have recently left full time teaching to work as a lecturer and educational consultant. I began my teaching career at the Royal Grammar School Newcastle and have been an A level examiner for many years. In a professional capacity I have taught ages 11-18, specialising in later years in A level English Literature and A Level Language teaching. I have an excellent record helping students improve A level grades and in successfully preparing students for Oxbridge. I am also highly experienced in the GCSE and IGCSE specifications and have helped many students in preparation for independent school entrance examinations and interviews. I am currently teaching 3 days a week at The Skinners School in Tunbridge Wells.
I hope my lessons are inspirational and, especially for younger children, fun. My aim in Literature is always to help my students see a connection between the books they are studying and their own lives. In teaching children towards 11+ entrance exams or GCSE I always aim to find materials that meet their own interests. I am as passionate about English grammar as I am about Literature: it is the foundation of success for English Language A level students - and I have many approaches to initiate students into its mysteries!
