Richard

Corby Tutor

Now retired I am looking for 2 or 3 students, as both stimulation of the old brain cells and to provide a modest additional income. In recent years my wife and I took on a large house and even larger garden that had been left empty for 10 years. After several years work at home I am now branching out more to increase my contact and awareness of the outside world. I still love my garden and spend most of my week keeping chickens as well as growing fruit, vegetables and decorative plants. i also enjoy making wine, preserves and, more recently, frozen yogurt ice creams. I am a volunteer with the Citizens Advice Bureau and take an active role in politics as a member of the Labour Party.

Tutoring Experience

I am a retired teacher with 28+ years in the classroom and have also tutored in the home for a further 5 years. My degree is in Economics and AS/A level Economics was my main teaching subject as a full-time teacher in state secondary education. At secondary level I have also taught Maths, History, Geography, RE, Business Studies and GNVQ Travel and Tourism. I have also provided support and had teaching experience over a 5-year period at Primary level KS2.
In Economics I was head of the subject for many years and have been an examiner at AS/A level for a number of years. I have also been ic of economic awareness and run Industry Days and Acivities Week in a large state comprehensive. In pastoral work as well as tutoring for decades I was Deputy Head of Year and Acting Head of Year.

Tutoring Approach

The approach will, of course, vary depending on the age, needs and personality of the student so I would initially assess what is required with the parent/student concerned. Normally I would expect to see the student 1-to-1 for 1 or 2 hours every week or, perhaps, fortnightly. This would be likely to briefly review progress in any homework tasks set by me or how the course is going in school/college. The main activity would then be a prepared lesson around a perceived target working together mostly. Usually I would expect to leave some follow up or preparatory task for the student to tackle by the next session.
