Personal Description:

I am an alumnus of the University of St Andrews where I graduated in 2010 with a degree in history. During my time at the University as a student I concentrated mainly on Scottish History, but I undertook various other related courses - mediaeval history, English, philosophy, psychology and management.

Towards the end of my degree, I started working full time for the University in their IT Services department, working on the website, where my key responsibility was web content creation and editing, so I spent a great deal of time creating and editing written copy suitable for the website on a wide variety of topics relating to various University practices.

Continuing with my academia, I am currently studying a distance learning degree with the notable Berklee College of Music in Boston, where I'm learning a variety of topics ranging from music theory to music production and business. I am also working through my ABRSM certification, having reached Grade 5 in music theory.

A passionate musician outwith my career, I play several instruments - bagpipes, guitar, saxophone, and a selection of others that I have learned for the purposes of writing and recording my own music. I currently operate as a professional bagpiper for hire at various events and have a function band too.

I have my own recording studio where I've produced my own albums and where I can provide music and music production tuition.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been teaching history and English to a variety of students of all ages since I graduated University, and delivered 1-1 music tuition in playing guitar and bagpipes. I also currently run a blog that focuses on key issues for independent musicians to help them with various issues in the music industry.

I previously worked for Dundee and Angus College as a learning skills tutor. This role focused more on the techniques and mechanisms behind learning to support successful study, and providing ad-hoc support to students when required.

In addition to my pursuits as a private tutor, I gained a lot of teaching experience is from my time working with the University of St Andrews, where as a part of my job role I provided monthly training workshops to large groups on the subject of writing for the web, and various web usability topics.

In addition I also ran a weekly "clinic" whereby web editors across the University could come to receive 1-1 training on various web techniques. I also provided 1-1 training on the use of the website's content management system.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach to tutoring is very personal, where each student's needs are assessed on an individual basis and there's no such thing as a stupid question. I am a very approachable and friendly person who tries to find a common ground with the student to help them feel calm and relaxed. Central to this is identifying the student's learning style and other areas of interest for them as a reference point.

With history I aim to deliver the fundamental skills required to effectively study any period, by systemising the steps in producing an answer. With English and Media Studies, I encourage the student to fully open their minds to the ethereal and outlandish to fully analyse the materials.

I always try to help the student see things from a different perspective and be able to put it into their own words, so they can fully understand the topic at hand. My approach is fully interactive, so I usually try to encourage the student to actively discuss the topic so we can work to identify where there are problems or difficulties.

In all cases I focus a lot on crafting an answer, essay technique and exam techniques as these are critical to a successful performance in an assessment.

I'm not the kind of person who dictates teaching to the student and ignores their needs.

I break topics down into small, digestible pieces so that the student doesn't feel overwhelmed, and they can build confidence as they get a solid grasp of each topic, rather than trying to pack a lot into a short space.

I like to push students to help them progress, but not at the expense of their confidence or understanding.
