Personal Description:

Full time, professional science tutor with outstanding results. I typically improve my students by two grades.

My name is Rich , I am an exam technique expert and frequently visit schools to give students hep and advice on how to revise and perform in exams. I run an online education company that produces Biology A-Level courses and pairs parents to excellent online tutors (but I can't tell you it's name here).

I have written, filmed and published an online video revision guide for the new AS Biology specification which has received fantastic reviews. I give my tutoring students free access to the course which is worth £500+. I am extremely busy running my education company, tutoring online and touring schools - please confirm I have availability before buying my details.

I'm a young, full time professional tutor with thousands of hours of tutoring experience and a 1st class degree in Biology. I specialise teaching students how to learn and excel in exams. I'm passionate about science and learning, plus I have a scar from a Bolivian puma!

I grew up in Surrey with two teachers as parents. I have always been interested in the sciences and love the conquest of knowledge. After graduating I spent a year working hard and saving funds with the express intention to travel. I subsequently bought a one way ticket to Mexico and spent 2 years travelling south through Latin America. I combine a unique blend of enthusiasm, confidence, youth, experience and reliability that makes my teaching more exciting and highly effective.

I love tea, intelligent conversation, honesty, crosswords, culture, music, science, good food, books, film, board games, browsing in charity shops, exploring (without a map), BBQ's, thinking in the shower and spending time with friends.

I have a degree in Biology and a handy knack for remembering all sorts of interesting bits and pieces. I play a lot of sport and spend as much time as possible outdoors with my friends, I'm forever organising trips away adventures… my current schemes involve taking some friends to dive a wreck in Cornwall.

I'm confident, easy going, full of stories, funny, always thinking and love meeting people. I had a huge snowboarding accident a couple of years ago when I fell 20m down a crevasse and since then I try to make the most of every opportunity possible.

Tutoring Experience:

I have been tutoring science and PE to students with a range of ability since 2010. Alongside my regular students I have increasingly taught various intensive GCSE/A-level revision courses, most recently working alongside the principle examiner for one of the major exam boards. During April last year I totalled more that 100 hours of one-to-one tuition in a month and continue to enjoy great success with all of my students.

I am passionate about science and have a comprehensive knowledge that I draw upon to create interest and inspire students to want to learn. I have adopted an approach to teaching that breaks information down into easily understood sections that relate directly to the specification and mark scheme. This is the ultimately efficient way to learn both in terms of how to pass exams but also for long term memory retention.

Tania Hogan: (Parent of Rory - AQA A-level Biology student of Tailored Tutors)
"We met Rich after my son’s apparent disastrous AS levels. We had already made the decision he would re-sit the year at a new school, and Rich agreed to help teach exam skills, AS Biology and give help where required on AS PE. It became apparent very quickly that the lack of exam skills were the root of his problem, so with a prescribed format to follow in all work, grades quickly began to improve in school, and more effective revision techniques were applied.Rich’s methods are refreshing to say the least, he ensures a great grounding of the content, in a snappy, precise way with lots of reinforcement towards the Exam Specification – something which had previously gathered dust on our shelves! The confidence Rich instilled really helped, his passion about the subject kept my son’s interest, and whist each session was very tiring, it was so positive one couldn't help being incredibly impressed by his tutoring skills."

"We are very grateful that my son’s grade in Biology was pulled up from an E to a B in a few short sessions – we certainly intend keeping Rich on for confidence and skills into the A2 year – why on earth would we not?"

Caroline Evans: (Parent of Venetia - OCR A-level Biology)
"I found Rich to be an excellent tutor for my daughter, who was previously struggling with her sciences. His inspirational teaching enabled her to gain confidence in comprehension of exam papers, and their completion. Rich also showed her how to revise effectively, and organise her work. He has a charming personality, which helps him engage with his students, together with marvellous general knowledge of myriad subjects."

Sue Frogley: (Parent of Charlie and Alex - iGCSE Science & AQA A-level Biology)
"The tutoring gave my son confidence but the biggest help was with exam technique. Prior to meeting Rich my son was able to talk in detail around a topic and write long answers but was unable to answer the exam question in the format required by examining boards. He came out of exams expecting an A because he had written long answers but when he met Rich he realised he had to answer the questions very specifically with key words etc. After his tutoring with Rich he was much more able to judge his performance in exams because he understood what was required to pass the exams.I would recommend Rich, his tutoring in exam technique is brilliant and is a good supplement to the studies at school."

Miranda Banks: (Employer with Exam Confidence)
"Rich, you are a star! My clients are beyond delighted. You have brought both knowledge of the subject and a deep understanding of “boy” personality that is required to bring out the best in learning. Thank you. We look forward to working with you in partnership for a long time to come."

Kathleen Johnson: (Parent of Ben - Edexcel A-level Biology)
"My 18 year old son, Dan, who is studying for his Biology A2, has really hit it off with Rich and is finding their 2 hour weekly revision sessions very helpful and his confidence is being boosted as a result. Rich has a warm and outgoing personality with plenty of passion for his subject. He instils confidence in pupil and parent alike. My son and I would both highly recommend Rich as a personal tutor."

Matthew Clarke: (Student AQA Physical Education)
Very good . Goes through the specification in detail and outlines the most important parts. Also simplifies the text book in to condensed notes for easy understanding. I would certainly recommend Rich to other people thinking of getting a tutor.

Domini Nicholson: (Parent of Milo, Finn and Bailey - Common Entrance Science and GCSE Science)
"Milo’s science has come on leaps and bounds – he’s now predicted A’s for all his GCSE which is fab! Finn got B grades in all of his 3 sciences – thank you so much – he was destined for D’s before I am sure!"

Nikki Lynne: (Parent of James and Freddie - GCSE Science and A-level Biology)
"I found that your ability to adapt to different learning methods for different children important. I also think that the feedback to the parents is useful and I like the way your invoices itemise the work you have done."

"The boys are singing your praises… Providing James has done reasonably well in his Biology he is going to do it as AS level and I think it would be good to start from the outset with your help, if that is ok. As I have learnt with Freddie that you really have to hit the ground running for AS."

"Thank you so much for all the work that you are doing with the boys. James has seemed to be much more motivated and trying with his work. They both continually say how good you are and how much you are helping them."

Lucinder Laver: (Parent of Charlie - Year 9 Sciences)
"Hi Rich. Just wanted to let you know how Charlie has done in his exams. He came 2nd to top in Biology getting 24/50!! Physics I think was 11\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\\38 and chemistry was 14/50 both physics and chemistry results were average for his class. We are really pleased since he wouldn’t have obtained those grades without your support so thank you! Charlie was pretty much bottom of his class throughout the year and it just proves that the tutoring has made a big difference! Charlie has started to believe in his abilities pretty much over the last 6 months and before then he really didn’t care since due to his severe Dyslexia he has had to work so much harder!"

Tutoring Approach:

My approach is more of a coach than a teacher, this helps to develop trust and lets me work with students not against them. My primary skills are communication and motivation, I find that explaining the reasons for what/why I am teaching has a huge impact on comprehension, it's impossible to learn without understanding.

I teach students how to best help themselves by using the specification as a skeleton and then a mixture of mnemonics, word associations and memory retention techniques to solidify knowledge. This makes understanding and learning new content easier, it is a method that works especially well in the sciences but can also be applied to all subjects with great effect.

Many students have a good level of content knowledge but let themselves down when it comes to answering exam questions. One of the core areas of my expertise is demonstrating the most effective ways to get the most out of exams, how to avoid common mistakes, revision technique, note writing and optimising time organisation. With the right guidance and practise many students can improve their grades significantly (sometimes there are as little as 6 raw marks between a D and a B).
