Personal Description:

I am an Oxford graduate in English Literature and Language and a qualified and experienced English teacher and tutor. I am currently spending time at home looking after my four boys but absolutely love teaching English and like to fit in as much as possible.

Tutoring Experience:

I have tutored GCSE, A/S, A level, degree and postgraduate English in the UK for fifteen years and am familiar with a wide variety of different examination boards, qualifications, marking criteria, and examiner's reports.

I have experience in teaching and tutoring students who are finding the subject hard and are needing extra help to rebuild their confidence whilst improving their skills. However, my academic background and experience enables me to tutor and teach very able students who are wanting to excel and I am very happy tutoring students aiming for A grades at any level.

I have tutored degree level students doing papers in English Literature but also graduate and post graduate students needing to improve their essay writing skills in a number of other subjects.

I also have qualifications and experience in teaching ESOL and in teaching students who are taking courses in English at A level or degree level even though it is not their first language.

I also tutor adult students taking exams, and also those wanting to improve their written communication skills for work or personal satisfaction, or for army entrance examinations. I am happy to take work at short notice to help students edit their own thesis, report, or essay.

Tutoring Approach:

I am a professional and encouraging tutor. The sessions are informal and are tailored to individual students - taking into account what they want to achieve, but also their learning style, strengths, and previous experiences. I aim to make students feel relaxed and confident - my aim is to inspire every student to find something to love about this subject and to want to do their best. I tutor enthusiastically and clearly and every one of my regular students over the last twelve years has made a quantifiable improvement. I will work with students to identify specific key areas that need extra input and then get those sorted first - and I will always plan for the student to improve their understanding and ability in as few sessions as possible. The best part for me is when students realise that they are better at this than they thought and start to develop their understanding and skills: meaning that they enjoy their studies more, as well as improving their grades.
