This is how 2 referees rated Priyana:
I am a third year postgraduate student currently studying towards an MBBS in Medicine and Surgery at the University of York. Prior to this I completed an undergraduate degree in Biomedical Sciences. I have always thoroughly enjoyed studying science and have wanted to pursue a career in medicine for as long as I can remember!
I make no apologies for the fact that I have had to work extremely hard to obtain the qualifications I have. I feel this is a major strength when it comes to teaching others. This is due to the fact that in order for me to truly understand a concept I have to be able to explain the concept in a simple stepwise fashion and then build it up as my understanding improves. This is a strategy I have used for many years and I really feel this could help students who are struggling to understand science and lacking in confidence.
When studying in London I worked as both a mentor and biology tutor for A-Level students. This primarily involved me improving the tutees understanding and academic performace but also equipping them with vital non academic skills enabling them to be successful, such as time management organisation skills and improving self confidence.
I have also worked as a voluntary facilitator and assessor for Bart's City Life Saver, a charity that teaches basic life support skills to various clients in London. This involved the ability to facilitate groups to assess and make sure the clients were competent in the necessary skills before they could complete the course.
I was also a form buddy during my time at sixth form where I tutored science to a number of students in the years below me, again successfully helping them to improve their grades and understanding.
During my previous and current degree, I have given a number of pretations and have completed a dissertation in a variety of complex topics. This not only requires in-depth understanding, but the ability to explain complex topics in an understandable way which I feel is a vital skill needed to teach science effectively.
As mentioned already my approach to tutoring is to break down concepts into a simple stepwise fashion. In addition to this I like to find out how best the tutee learns e.g the use of colour, and tailor the session to use those skills the most. Sometimes the tutees find it helpful to learn by association or even use mnemonics to prompt them in remembering concepts with more than one point. I also will make use of the relevant syllabus and marking scheme to help in preparation for upcoming exams.
