Personal Description:

I have just finished my MSci in Zoology (Biological Sciences), obtaining an upper second class degree. I am now working as an intern at the Institute of Zoology, which is the research part of the Zoological Society of London. I am now interested in conservation biology but when I chose my degree during my A level studies I was more interested in the medical side, so I feel that I have covered a broad range of biological topics.
I also have A-grade A levels in chemistry, French and Italian and feel capable in teaching these subjects to a very high standard up to GCSE level, or perhaps as preparation over the summer before starting AS levels.
I received 7 A* GCSEs in the subjects I studied for A level as well as maths, Latin and history, and I received A's in English language and literature, and art.

Tutoring Experience:

I have carried out one-on-one tutoring for a pupil struggling after KS1 literacy and felt that I hugely improved her confidence in reading and writing. I have also volunteered as a tutor for children of various ages in English, maths and science at a Saturday homework club. I have tutored French up to GCSE level.
I have always taken my studies seriously, as shown by my high academic achievements. I am very passionate about the subjects I have taken further, particularly the sciences and languages, as I find endless uses for both of these. I also believe, however, very strongly in the importance of strong maths and English skills, and I think that these are particularly important to build on early on in life. Teaching literacy to a pupil who had just moved into year 3 was hugely rewarding because I felt that particularly at that stage, increasing confidence in one aspect of learning is vital to improvements in all other subjects.

Tutoring Approach:

In my opinion, the most important role of a tutor is to increase a pupil's confidence in the subject, through encouragement and enthusiasm. I think one of the first steps is to find the aspects of a subject that a pupil excels in, as an incentive to improve in other areas and to increase hope, which can be lacking in difficult subjects! It is also very important to be able to explain the point of studying different subjects, and to find an aspect of interest for the pupil in every subject.
Languages in particular can be seen as 'pointless' by many pupils but I have found the three languages I have studied to be so useful, in developing a logical way of thinking, learning about different cultures, improving my English (I learnt more about English grammar through Latin than in English lessons!) and feeling more confident in communicating in general. In my degree it has helped me to be able to read scientific papers in other languages, and I have found that knowing French and Italian means I can understand a lot of Spanish, without ever having formally learnt any.
I have found both the voluntary and paid tutoring I have done so far incredibly rewarding and I am very keen to increase my experience and help others and share my experiences with them.
