Personal Description:

A tutor with a First Class Honours degree in English Literature, Philippa is currently tutoring GCSE English Language and Literature to the new grade 9 - 1 specifications, as well as A Level English Literature. She also tutors several young students in Key Stage 2, SATs and Entrance Exams. Through a thorough knowledge of assessment objectives and a wide range of relevant texts and resources, Philippa helps students improve understanding, enjoyment, writing skills and grades.
Bookings for Autumn 2017 are now open, with some availability for after school and Saturdays, and more flexibility for home-schooled students during weekdays.

Tutoring Experience:

Philippa is experienced in the new specifications for GCSE and A Level across exam boards including AQA, OCR and Edexcel and the new requirements for SATs at Primary level. GCSE and A Level texts include 'An Inspector Calls', 'To Kill a Mockingbird', 'Dr Jekyll & Mr Hyde', 'Jane Eyre', Shakespeare, set poetry anthologies, and many more. She supports and builds on school learning, and has also tutored a completely home-schooled child to achieve A and A* in English Language and Literature GCSEs. Before tutoring, Philippa was a marketing director in London for many years, managing and developing a team and overseeing all marketing communications. She has experience in an educational environment as a school governor.

Tutoring Approach:

Philippa works closely with tutees to discuss and identify areas where they would like help, devising a tailored programme to suit each individual and building confidence and ability. She helps students develop strong skills in close textual analysis as well as helping build a thorough understanding of the whole text: its themes, characters, language, structure and context, whether studying poetry, drama or novels. She also has a wide range of resources, revision sheets and practice papers. Sessions may also focus on writing techniques, structuring essays, grammar and time management skills. Close attention is paid to what the examiners are looking for in each question and how extra points can be gained.
