This is how 2 referees rated Peter:
I am a fit and active person who enjoys keeping fit, having taken part in marathons and triathlons. I thoroughly enjoy mathematics, the challenges it poses and the satisfaction of seeing students understand how to use their skills and adapt them to solve even more problems
I have been teaching mathematics for over 16 years in schools and colleges, being head of department for mathematics at present. I have experience of teaching and tutoring GCSE to the Edexcel, OCR, and AQA linear and modular syllabus' as well as the IGCSE syllabus. In addition I have taught and tutored AS and A2 level core mathematics and mechanics, along with foundation degree mathematics work. Every student has different needs and understanding and therefore I find it important to encourage the student to reason how to solve problems with the knowledge they have and from this introduce new concepts. By doing so the student gains further knowledge, interest, and confidence.
To show empathy for a student is essential. By determining what a student does understand it is possible to build on this to explain new topic areas and help the student to feel comfortable and confident with the topics and with mathematics as a whole. Mathematics is a skill that once learnt can be built on and utilised in many other subjects. The reasoning and logical approach to mathematics is a necessary skill that should be encouraged, not just a series of facts learnt for a test/exam.
