Personal Description:

I am married (30 years) with three grown-up children. I live in Crewe but work in Wolverhampton. I have QTS and QTLS (Qualified Teacher & Lecturer Status) and have passed Enhanced Disclosure (CRB). I am a member of Institute for Learning (MIfL), and have completed Professional Formation.

I enjoy chess, genealogy, and dog-walking. I am a qualified First-Aider. Parents have written to say that I am reliable, punctual, polite, approachable, trustworthy, competent, highly-skilled, interesting, committed to the job. They say that I teach in an engaging manner, boost the confidence of the child, and recommend my services. (Copies available upon request)

I live in Crewe, Cheshire, and work in Wolverhampton. I am offering tutiion in the area around the railway stations and college sites where I work, along my travel route or within realistic cycling distance . If you live further afield, I may be able to help, depending upon the ease of travel to your home, and mutually convenient times.

Please note, the introductory rate (£9.95) is for the first 3 lessons only. The normal rate is £20/hour. After seeing how well your child improves, you will think it well worth paying. I am very good at what I do, and my existing clients think this is cheap.

Tutoring Experience:

I taught in schools for seven years, and college for 23, including several years at the University. I have provided tuition for over 30 years, often working with the same family for the duration of a child's schooling, and then for several siblings. I have an extensive collection of past papers and worksheets, which focus on specific topics or exams, and the repetition is invaluable.

I have tutored many children of Primary school age, and have had great success with children from age 6 to 11. For many years I was a Cub Scout leader, so I know this age group and what gets their attention. I have averaged 4 tutees per week for over 20 years, but on occasions have worked with many more. I have also tutored small groups, and offer great rates for 2 or 3 children at a time.

I encourage tutees to record their queries/confusions in a small diary, and we discuss their list at the start of the lesson. I also set and mark homework every lesson.

I rarely have a vacancy, can only fit in one or two new pupils at a time, and must agree a suitable time before agreeing to a new assignment. Therefore, please do not pay anything until we have confirmed the details.

Please note, Please note, the introductory rate (£9.95) is for the first 3 lessons only, the normal rate is £20/hour. After seeing how well your child improves, you will think it well worth paying. Children only get one childhood, I am very good at what I do.

Tutoring Approach:

My mission is to plug the gaps. School teaches the topic, I clarify it. So often, the difficulty is not the actual topic, but the underlying knowledge, which was not learned years earlier. For example, a pupil struggles to cope with algebra because they have not learned times tables.

It is important to have specific, measurable, achievable targets. Close scrutiny of the syllabus, reference to the pupil's progress, and identification of the weaknesses is the first step. Then we agree a series of stages to be reached, and a realistic time-frame to achieve them. I provide easy-to-follow explanations & examples, pupils complete further exercises to cement the learning (homework!). Finally we test that the mission is accomplished, with a short test. The pupils contribute to their progress by monitoring their own learning, and completing a progress chart or skills record.

Pupils benefit from routines and procedures. So, a fixed day & time each week is important. Then, to get mentally ready for the session, it helps to get physically ready. Pupils should prepare a table & chairs in a room (with no TV/ipod/etc), gather books/pens/pencils/homework, and dress appropriately.

Children associate an activity with a set of clothes; sports kit for football, white suit for Judo, uniform for school. Changing into a specific uniform for tutoring helps to focus their mind, get them ready to learn, and clearly defines the start & end of the session. Kids like to dress up! To differentiate the tutoring from school, the uniform should be sufficiently different. For pupils in KS1 to 3, I expect a white/grey shirt, tie, grey shorts/skirt, long socks. I have found, in all my years of experience, that this small act helps more than any other thing. Parents & pupils like it because it works.

Please note Please note, the introductory rate (£9.95) is for the first 3 lessons only, the normal price is £20 per hour. For me, this not a job, it is a passion.
