Confidence is the key to mathematics. I give every student I teach the confidence and enthusiasm they require to succeed by showing them that they are capable of far more than they think they are and that there is no such word as 'can't'. I try to develop a good relationship between myself and my students such that they feel secure enough to shout out the answer when they have it or pause for thought if it's not quite there yet. I value laughter and determination, and I ensure that all of my lessons contain both in abundance, with a little bit of self-directed learning for good measure.
I have worked for the Swindon Tuition Centre teaching Maths as well as by myself for a number of years now, achieving some fantastic results during that time. I have also tutored university undergraduates at both the University of Bristol and University College London.
I think that every person is different, and should be treated with respect and patience.
I first begin with an assessment of each person to see at what stage they are at and where we need to focus. I then concentrate on those areas as well as the areas that are fundamental to success, such as algebra and arithmetic. I usually set 10, quick, homework questions that we discuss at the start of each session, and I use computer software to enable self-directed learning at every stage.
