Personal Description:

I am an experienced professional tutor and qualified teacher (QTS) with a B.Sc. (Hons) in Geology from the University of Exeter, a Ph.D. in Geology & Zoology from the University of Bristol and a PGCE (masters level Post Graduate Certificate in Education – Secondary Education Science with Chemistry Specialism) from the University of Brighton
Prior to becoming a professional teacher I have lectured and undertook research in Universities & Museums around the world including Bristol, Birmingham, Imperial College London, Portsmouth, Tokyo (Japan) and Miami (USA). For over 13 years I worked at the Natural History Museum in London as a Curator and lastly as the Registrar with a responsibility for managing 150+ scientists and 75 million specimens. Most recently I decided that I wanted to pass on my passion for science and I have been teaching science from Year 7 to A level in secondary schools and colleges in Surrey & West Sussex.
I have published many scientific papers, articles, encyclopaedia entries and have written two scientific books and have acted as a scientific consultant to many BBC and other TV programmes including working with David Attenborough on series such as the ‘Life of Birds’.
I am a member of the Association for Science Education and I am one of three Honorary Patrons of the Charmouth Heritage Coast Centre on the Jurassic Coast World Heritage Site. Due to my scientific knowledge and experience in education I have served on the executive board and as a trustee for many organisations including Museums Association, Collections Trust, Palaeontographical Society, Geologists’ Association, Haslemere Educational Museum amongst others.

Tutoring Experience:

My tutoring experience began as a Ph.D. student when I tutored undergraduate students. Since then I have tutored, mentored and supervised both undergraduates and postgraduates (M.Sc. and Ph.D. students). I am a qualified teacher (QTS) and first taught science in schools in 1994. Teaching and tutoring is now my main profession I have experience of teaching science subjects at all levels with all of the major examining boards to students from Year 7 (KS3) up to A level (KS5).
My particular expertise is in Science and I can offer tutoring as follows:
• Undergraduate and Postgraduate – Geology & Evolutionary Biology
• A level - Chemistry, Biology, Geology, & Environmental Science
• Up to and including GCSE – All Sciences and Maths
Over the last 20+ years I have taught and tutored many students and have experience of both tutoring subject knowledge and exam technique as well as preparing students for university interviews and job interviews.

Tutoring Approach:

As a qualified teacher with a PGCE my approach to tutoring is to consider every student as an individual and to make learning fun. I have a passion for the subjects that I teach, and I try to enthuse my students too. A happy student is a more productive student and I endeavour to make my tutoring sessions a highlight of their week, rather than a chore.

Whether you are someone who is struggling with the subject, or someone who wants to improve your grade or get an A* in the exam for your University place, I offer a bespoke tutoring experience. In addition to teaching the subject content, I cover exam preparation, including working through past papers and exam techniques. I provide revision plans tailored to the individual. I also offer reading lists for students preparing for University interviews. Nearer exam time, I can offer intensive revision sessions where I tutor in groups or individually.

I have excellent academic credentials, teaching/training experience and a successful career working as a professional scientist. I believe I can help any student improve their exam grade and reach their potential and most of all, I want to see them succeed.

Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
