Brighton Tutor

Hello! I am a patient, conscientious, and encouraging tutor who will help students build confidence and insight. I will spend time guiding students in the appropriate direction and encourage them to engage with the subject and make their learning meaningful. I understand the importance of knowing your students to recognise their motivation and thus help improve their confidence and ability. I hold a Philosophy Master’s degree (with distinction) in ‘Social and Political Thought’ - where I received the Gillian Rose Memorial Prize for the ‘Best Dissertation in Social and Political Thought’ – and also an undergraduate Sociology degree (2:1).

Tutoring Experience

I have a range of teaching experience which highlights how I am able to work at different levels and with a multiplicity of students. Whilst teaching English at a middle school in South Korea, I ran after-school clubs where I tutored students preparing to take their high school examinations. I have also taught for ‘Oxford International Educational Group’ where I tutored particular students beyond the set curriculum. Further, I have taught for Sprachcaffe where I planned and delivered a curriculum for multiple classes and led extra-curricular lessons for a number of students. I also have experience tutoring music, particularly guitar and bass guitar.

Tutoring Approach

My approach to tutoring is student-centred and recognises that each student will have their own learning style. Taking this into consideration, I will use the first lesson to discuss the individual aims of each student in order to construct a strategy to achieve their goals. Studying is challenging, but can be made easier by knowing what works for and motivates individuals; I aim to help students build confidence and develop their analytic skills to achieve a stronger understanding of their chosen subject.

I place a strong emphasis on essay writing which is vital when studying English, Philosophy and Sociology. For students studying at an undergraduate or post graduate level, I am able to use my deep and broad knowledge to help students identify appropriate information and present it clearly and creatively within essays and dissertations. Selecting and presenting the most relevant information is one of the hardest skills when essay writing, and I aim to help students develop their ability to structure essays and increase their confidence when it comes to writing. If students are studying towards an exam, I will place an emphasis on exam technique.
