Personal Description:

My extensive teaching experience spans the globe from the United States, Japan and the UK, and this gives me a truly international perspective. I am American by birth and I choose to make my home in the UK. For the past 23 years, my career has been focused on my love of teaching students and the enjoyment of helping them to succeed.

Much of my tutoring experience has been with students aged 12-18 and I have also worked with many adult students. My master’s degree in Special Education has helped me in working with students with dyslexia and other learning difficulties, and my master’s degree in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL) has supported my work with students who have a first language other than English.

I have a current CRB (Enhanced Disclosure) certificate.

Tutoring Experience:

• My tutoring experiences range from working with students on English, English as an Additional Language (EAL), study skills and learning difficulties such as dyslexia and ADHD.

• I have worked with students aged 12 to adult to improve their English reading and writing skills, as well as speaking and listening.

• In my international experiences over the past 20 years, I have worked with students from a wide variety of first languages to improve their English abilities, both in the classroom and 1:1 tutoring.

• Having worked with students with learning difficulties such as dyslexia and ADHD for more than 17 years, I have developed strategies to help them succeed with their own personal learning style.

• I have taught English to adults both in Japan and the USA as well as in the UK at the Berlitz Language Centre.

Tutoring Approach:

I work with each student as a unique individual with his/her own learning needs and goals. My approach is student-centered: In the first lesson I focus on getting to know the student and use that information to design a tutoring program to best meet their needs. I want to find out about my student’s interests to adapt the tutoring program accordingly. It is always helpful if a student doing an external exam course such as GCSE or A-level can provide their teacher's feedback to help me focus the tutoring sessions to provide the greatest benefit for the student.

To give you a fuller picture of how I work as an educator, I would like to share with you the following comments about my performance from letters of recommendation written by my teaching supervisors:

‘A dedicated, resourceful and knowledgeable teacher’

‘Demonstrates a commitment to educate all children’

‘Uses specialized teaching methods to address their different learning styles’

‘She frequently exceeded our high expectations of an instructor’s responsibilities in order to ensure that the students are provided with the most thorough lesson possible’
