Government and Politics
I am a highly experienced and fully qualified teacher with an excellent rapport with children. As a tutor, I am positive, hard-working, reliable and always strive to make learning engaging, rigorous and fun.
I'm available to tutor in the evenings and weekends. During the holidays, I can provide intensive tuition to suit your needs. Upon request, I can offer excellent references, qualification certificates and an up to date CRB check.
I have six years’ teaching experience, including A-Level. Within History education, I have a number of specialist areas, but can offer tuition in any area of History. I attended the University of Warwick and gained a BA in History & Politics. Subsequently, I completed a PGCE at the Institute of Education, London (part of the University of London). I can also offer tuition in A-Level Politics and have strong understanding of the pedagogies associated with the teaching of English, Maths and the 11+ exam too, so please contact me if you are interested in these areas.
I love working with young people and seeing them progress. I have a passion for education and history in particular and will seek to spark your child’s interest in the subject (as necessary), typically by referring to a current news story that is relevant to the subject being studied.
Personalisation and Progress
I appreciate that each student is different so I always strive to ensure my tutoring reflects their individual needs, goals and learning style. After discussion with parents and students, we can identify goals (including Exam grade targets) and agree a plan of action that will take the student to this point. By utilising my knowledge of the requirements of a wide variety of exam boards, I can offer highly precise targets for improvement. These targets are always shared with parents unless this is considered unnecessary.
Praise and honesty
Although good at putting children at ease and instilling them with confidence, I am also honest and able to motivate them if I feel that their effort levels could improve.
Student ownership of learning
I allow students to show their knowledge and push them to develop the analytical skills they need. I will of course provide ‘the answers’, but only after I have got them to really think. This approach not only improves their memory retention but encourages them to be responsible for their own learning, and hence maximises their attainment.
Responsive to parents
I maintain good quality communication with parents, in person or by email, to ensure that we are working together. I reply to emails as quickly as possible and hope to hear from you shortly.
I have found in the past that the best progress is made when there is an ongoing commitment made by both tutor and student. The summer holidays are the perfect time to seek the help of a tutor who can provide your child with a boost before the start of the new academic year. I can commit to offering tuition all the way through the next academic year until the time of the exams in Summer 2016, subject to your needs.
