Personal Description:

I am a qualified Drama teacher with four years of experience teaching Drama and English in secondaries schools. I am also a trained actress with experience working in film, TV and theatre. I have also worked as a Drama workshop leader for various high profile youth and educational theatre companies.
I absolutely love working with young people and have done so since the age of 19, when I had my first taste of teaching as a volunteer in a primary school in the Fiji Islands. I adore travelling all over the world as much as possible and have a love of languages. (I speak French and Spanish fluently.) I also love swimming, scuba diving, running, hiking, tennis, dancing and singing. I am the lead singer in a rock and blues band I'm Brighton called SlimShack and we regularly do gigs in and around Brighton and Sussex.
I am about to unite my love of literature and Drama by studying on a one year Dramatic Writing Program, where I will be finally putting my ideas to paper to write film and tv scripts, as well as theatre and radio plays.
I have a love for life, in particular for Drama, literature, and languages, and I relish any opportunity to pass this passion on to young people through my teaching.

Tutoring Experience:

I have taught Drama from Key Stage 3 up to A Level in schools in Oxfordshire, Sussex and, most recently, Johannesburg, South Africa. I have worked as a Drama practitioner and director for companies such as Stagecoach, Perform, National Youth Theatre and Youth Music Theatre. I have taught and prepared students for the LAMDA qualification and exams, helping select suitable prose, poems, monologues and scenes. In my last school, Greenside High, many of my drama students improved by two grades in six months through my practical tutorage. I have taught English from Key Stage 3 up to GCSE, in Sussex and Johannesburg. Whilst in Johannesburg, alongside my full time high school job, I worked part-time as a tutor with a 14 year old boy, tutoring English (language and literature) and Spanish. His grades increased significantly during this time. I also worked for three months in a language school in Johannesburg teaching English as a foreign language from Beginners to Intermediate. This was working with children and adults alike.
I currently work as a supply teacher and tutor in Brighton.

Tutoring Approach:

From my experience, I find that successful tutoring arises initially from being organised and setting realistic targets. Myself and the student will look at school or university workload and create a schedule. Then we will create SMART targets for the year/ month (specific, measurable, accurate, realistic and time-related.) My aim as a tutor is to make the student a successful independent learner so my time spent tutoring them is about discussion about and around the subject/topic, encouraging research and providing resources and tools to understand the subject/topic better, and assisting with the work itself. If a student is writing an English essay, for example, I will get him/her to talk through their planning and show me a first draft. I will then give feedback and encourage an edit and look at the second draft. We will always refer to any assessment criteria in order to make sure we are ticking all boxes to get the best grade possible. For Drama tutoring, we discuss character, themes and story plot in detail. If writing an essay, we do as above for English (discussion, planning, drafting, editing, and referring to assessment criteria.) If tutoring a student with a performance piece, I get a sense of what monologue or scene would suit the student's personality and strengths as a performer and provide various scene suggestions. I encourage character work and research and use Stanislavski techniques to draw out a performance that is truthful and engaging.
