I am a very enthusiastic guy who loves talking about and communicating science in general, and physics in particular. I have worked in various industries since leaving university, including safety analysis in the nuclear sector as well as three years doing detailed environmental impact assessments for the offshore oil and gas industry in Perth, Australia. I also had a brief stint teaching people about the science of roasting coffee! That is all to say that I have some good real-world experience to contextualise a lot of science learning.
I became a teacher 18 months ago and have fallen in love with it - hence why I am signing up for more of it for the weekends.
I am a qualified teacher with a PGCE from the UCL institute of education, and a 1st class masters degree in Physics from the University of Manchester. I am currently working as a teacher, teaching physics AS and A level, and GCSE science. I have prior experience tutoring as preparation for Oxbridge interviews.
My approach to tutoring is the same as my approach to learning in a classroom - I feel that enquiry, positivity and encouragement are vital, and I pride myself on being able to convey enthusiasm for my subject and develop in students the same love of learning that I have! Nothing gives me greater pleasure than seeing a lightbulb go on above someones head.
I believe that teachers should be teaching *how* to think, not what to think. Science is not a body of knowledge to be conveyed from one person to another - it is a way of looking at the world with a critical and curious eye.
While exam preparation is of utmost importance, I feel being able to recite a method for answering a certain question is no substitute for the core, deep understanding that allows students to apply their knowledge into new and unfamiliar scenarios. This principle is always at the forefront of my mind when teaching science.
