Oliver

Glasgow Tutor

I am a young composer, based in Glasgow. I have just finished my undergraduate degree in composition at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, studying under Stuart MacRae and Dr Gareth Williams. I have had music performed by groups such as Red Note Ensemble, Said Ensemble, and the Perth Symphony Orchestra, as well as by various students of the RCS and the Royal Northern College of Music. Current composition projects include a short opera and collaboration with Drake Music Scotland.

As well as school syllabuses, I am willing and able to teach Composition, Music Theory, and Guitar (I have a FirstTutors: Music profile for these).

I am fluent in the use of Sibelius software, and have experience with sequencers and DAWs (digital audio workstation) (mostly Protools and Cubase). I have a basic working knowledge of Finale, Lilypond, and MuseScore as well.

Whilst I do not have a recent disclosure form, I will apply for one if preferred.

Tutoring Experience

I spent a year between finishing my A-Levels and starting my degree volunteering in the music department at Winstanley College, assisting students in writing their compositions and helping teach music theory. At the same time, I helped run a group called Just About Musicians, where I helped, encouraged and guided young (12-18 year old) musicians in group ensemble work, with the focus on composition and improvisation. My degree has involved me undertaking a study of teaching in regard to music, with focus on the psychology and various approaches to teaching people of all ages and abilities. I have also been privately tutoring Advanced Higher Music over the last year.

Tutoring Approach

My approach is totally flexible and dependent on the pupil. I prefer to work in a relaxed, informal environment. Initially, there would be a meeting to discuss what the goals of the tuition are and how best to facilitate them, with things being taken from there.

I am willing to travel, however I do not own a car, and so I have to cycle or rely on public transport. Depending on the location and distance, travel expenses may have to be added to the tuition costs.
