Personal Description:

Hello! I've worked at HM Treasury as a Policy Advisor since September 2015, and prior to that studied European Social and Political Studies at UCL, with a year abroad in Copenhagen. Although seeing as I grew up just north of London, near Watford, you could say that I'm fairly well rooted to the big City! I went to school in Chesham, where I studied Maths (A*), Politics (A) and History (A) at A-level.

My main academic interests are in Politics and History, and have been since my GCSE years when I first really started to enjoy the stories and subplots that these subjects specialise in so well. I also tended to enjoy Maths throughout, perhaps because of the innate logic, so my job right now gives me the perfect combination of these three.

Outside of studying and work, I'm a keen runner and football fan.

Tutoring Experience:

Maths and English volunteer tuition with Team Up during University - mainly tutoring GCSE level students
Activity Leader (2014) followed by Head of Sports and Activities (2015) with Ardmore Language Schools - 4 weeks at a school in Bath with international students. The students were there on an English language course, whilst I coordinated their activities and cultural trips, with particular emphasis on practising their English skills.
Badminton teaching with SmashUp! in 2014 and 2015 - mainly teaching 10-14 year olds.

Tutoring Approach:

I prefer quite a proactive approach to tutoring, in which I encourage the students to learn and do things for themselves, rather than telling them the correct answers. For example, in Maths tutoring I will teach the students the framework and basic skills to answer the question, whilst the emphasis is on the student to start applying them.

I also like to be flexible in my approach - for example some students prefer to learn directly from the book and pick up the foundation skills, whilst some other students are better suited to a more conversational style, which helps to make the subject far more interesting (this is especially relevant in history). It's important that tutoring is part of a wider 2-way discussion between the tutor and the student, to understand and know which style will work best for both…
