I’m a PhD researcher and Teaching Assistant for undergraduate historical studies at the Royal College of Music London.
I graduated with a Master of Music [Distinction] and BMus (Hons) [First] from RCM.
Aside from academic music research, I am a concert pianist. I have a wide range of knowledge in music in relation to literature, history and politics. I present at academic conferences regularly.
I have freelanced for 10 years as a piano and theory teacher, including music history and programme notes writing whenever needed. I came to London at the age of 16 for my BMus; in Singapore, I studied at Raffles.
I am a TA who supports professors in year 2 undergraduate historical studies lectures and seminars. I have experience in mentoring undergraduates, grading essays, setting quizzes, and designing seminars for undergraduates. I also have insider knowledge of how professors grade essays, and how to meet the requirements of each mark band.
I tutor at BA/BMus and MA/MMus levels for music essays, research proposals, aural transcriptions or listening exams. Music essays that relate to race, gender, class, literature, cultural history, and politics in the 19th and 20th centuries are my expertise.
I also work with students writing programme notes for graduation recitals and portfolios.
My bilingual abilities in English and Chinese make me particularly suited for international students who require extra support because of language barriers. These students may be very capable thinkers but are simply not used to a certain style of questioning (for essays), or complex terminology they have never encountered in pre-university. I am able to simplify complex ideas and terms into simpler words that are easy to digest. I am able to translate back and forth between English and Chinese, something that professors and many other tutors are not able to offer. One student at the RCM improved from a 40 (pass) to a 62 (upper second class) after a year.
I have also helped students prepare personal statements and interviews for their Music university applications.
I teach Study Skills for any age and level and can help them with efficient note-taking, managing deadlines, and pressure. I teach English (EFL) to Chinese international students.
I am professional and passionate about my tutoring. I believe in empowering my students to become independent thinkers who can apply analytical skills and concepts to their future work. I believe in study methods that are productive and efficient, and believe in conscious application rather than mindless repetition.
