Personal Description:

I am an experienced guitar tutor, having taught classical and popular acoustic styles for over 3 years in Leeds. I have been playing the guitar for over 15 years, specialising in classical and flamenco styles on the nylon-string guitar, and have a Grade 8 in classical guitar. I am thus also able to teach sight-reading and basic music theory, for which I have a Grade 5. I am also happy to cover any other fingerpicking styles, and have a broad knowledge of popular and world music, including Indian and West African musics.

Tutoring Experience:

I was an English Assistant in Guadeloupe, France, where I also received training in teaching methods. Since then several years as a tutor have expanded my abilities to engage with individual needs. My years of both learning and teaching the guitar have given me an insight into a variety of teaching styles, and I am happy to encourage and push students according to their needs and desires. I have a range of useful exercises and other materials at my disposal, in order to provide a structured, varied and rewarding learning experience. I place an emphasis on avoiding the dogmatic approach usually associated with learning classical music, covering tricky elements such as technique in ways in which the student can quickly appreciate results
in their regular playing.

I am able to work both on a one-to-one and a group basis, and have gained experience as a workshop leader in schools with Sounds of Life, and at festivals with the Ladybird Project. I am also an experienced singer, and often integrate aspects of singing and vocalisation into my instrumental teaching, since these can often be replicated and understood more readily whilst students are still developing the specific muscles required to play their instrument.

Tutoring Approach:

Patience. Listening to the students questions and determining what will be the most efficient way to tackle them, either through a flexible or planned program, depending on expectations and timescale.
