Information About Nick - Highbury tutor - (3 reviews)
I hold a PhD in English and Comparative Literature from the University of Warwick. I also hold an MA from the University of Manchester, as well as a BA (Hons) from Warwick. My research specialisms include Shakespeare and modern Irish writing, though I have taught more widely than those two areas. I have a background in Classical education in Latin, as well as spending time living and working in France.
My rates are more than competitive, and the service I provide is excellent. I am easy to get along with, and have a good grounding in teaching.
I have three chief strands of teaching experience. First, I have taught in highly-rated independent schools for the past three years. Teaching at Hampton and Highgate Schools, I have coached students from Years 7 to 13, preparing the older students for public exams, including GCSEs, IGCSEs, A/AS level and Pre-U. I have helped prepare students for university applications and interviews, including Oxbridge.
Second, I have taught at the University of Warwick for the past five years. I have lectured, tutored and supervised on a range of material, including both first-year and honours-level modules. I set and mark formative, summative and exam essays. Furthermore, I am soon to complete my application to become Associate Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
Finally, I have been tutoring privately for nearly ten years, helping younger students in the years prior to GCSE, as well as helping students finalise their revision in the run up to A level exams. I have experience in everything!
The first session will be an assessment whereby I can estimate the level that the student is currently working at. More often than not, this will include a simple test on essential terms and ideas, as well as a 'chat' with the student to assess their level of understanding of the subject, and where they feel they are. Thereafter, the sessions can be tailored to the specific needs of the student.
Also, it is essential to integrate the learning -- and supplement as well -- with what the student is studying in their mainstream education. When this comes to exams, it is even more essential to complement the work undertaken in schools with what I will be doing outside the classroom.
