Personal Description:

Nick is an Oxford English graduate who has worked as a strategy consultant and set up various businesses as an entrepreneur, including raising $5m in funding as Development Director for **Web Address Removed** in San Francisco, developing a £1m property portfolio in Notting Hill and the Alps and providing financial backing for the first two albums by a singer-songwriter from Brisbane, who has now won record deals with Sony and EMI and released a number one single in Greece (see **Web Address Removed**). In his spare time, he loves travel and wildlife photography, golf, skiing and dancing:
- He has sold over 1,000 photographs, had numerous exhibitions and been published in newspapers such as The Evening Standard and The Daily Mail
- He helped win the southern and national team ballroom dancing championships for Oxford University and won a Half Blue for being on the winning team in the Varsity match.
- He spent four ski seasons in Méribel and Val d'Isère and lived in Lyon, where he learned to speak French fluently with the aid of a French girlfriend.
- He also spent 18 months in Brisbane, where he became a scratch golfer, and now coaches privately and at City Golf in London.

Tutoring Experience:

He has had around 400 clients aged between 9 and 45 whom he teaches English, French, Maths, verbal and non-verbal reasoning and essay writing. He also coaches various pastimes to friends and colleagues in his spare time, including golf, sailing, photography and ballroom and Latin dancing.

Tutoring Approach:

I generally teach ‘by exception’ from past papers. In other words, I’ll ask the pupil to complete a Maths paper as homework, say, and then go through it the following week, marking it and discussing any problems. I try to help pupils remember what they’ve learned by asking questions rather than telling them what to do, but occasionally I’ll have to dictate notes on a particular subject and ask them to do a few practice questions to make sure everything is clear. All those notes will then become a ready-made revision guide that they can use in the run-up to the exams. The only exception to this method comes when I teach 11+ or 13+ English. There are only two types of question in these exams – comprehension and composition – so I’ll generally start off by teaching pupils how to do one or the other and then ask them to do a sample paper for homework that we can go through together during the following session. After a week or two, I’ll swap to the other topic and do the same. If clients ask me to address specific problems or look at particular texts, I can certainly do so, but that’s my usual way of working.

I’m generally very patient, so it doesn’t matter how slowly we go, as long as we’re making progress. I also like my lessons to be enjoyable, which might mean ‘colouring outside the lines’ by having a discussion of Cantor’s Inn during a Maths lesson or playing an Alanis Morissette song during an English lesson to illustrate what irony is – or isn’t! Whatever works…

"Thank you so much for your help! And thank you so much for letting me send you my draft and read over it!! I'm a bit clumsy with my sentences, so you reading it will be a great help!! I'm starting to draft it today - so in the next week or so I'll be sending you my first copy if that's still okay!

"You really have helped me in grasping the concept of this essay question and what to include!"
