Personal Description:

I am currently taking on new students on Sundays and Monday afternoons.

I have a Ph.D. in English from Cambridge (but I'm nice and not at all scary), and I started out teaching English to university students. Since then I've really enjoyed teaching English and Drama to school students in time off from my career as a theatre director; I am now training to be a psychoanalyst and dovide my time between London and Prestbury. I also offer help with Entrance Exams, 11 and 13+. So let`s see how I can help! I've taught quite young children and would be very happy doing exam preparation, essay or conversation practice. Whatever you think you need to improve your confidence and skills. Very happy to take on new subjects and I'm now also doing Skype tuition online for those of you who are further away. This can work really well. Drop me a message and we can sort something out.

Tutoring Experience:

I've taught students in English Literature and Language at Trinity, St John's and Fitzwilliam colleges at Cambridge University. I also have a long-term relationship with the Drama department at Worth School in West Sussex, where I have taught as part of the GCSE, A-Level and IB as well as directing full-scale productions. I've tutored privately for a number of years here and abroad and I have a CELTA qualification to teach English as a foreign language. I'm also a professional theatre director and have worked for English National Opera in London and The Wooster Group in New York.

Tutoring Approach:

We start with a needs analysis, finding out the learning styles that best suit you and what your goals are. After that things are different for different students.

As summer approaches I am especially busy with students on study leave: some people find just a few sessions of a couple of hours really helpful to bring their set texts into focus. I also enjoy supporting foreign students on summer school courses.

I meet some people weekly, some people monthly, or I've done intensive periods (in school holidays for example) where we see each other most days and then perhaps work on SKYPE or over email after that. It really depends on what helps you meet your goals–––––––––––homework or no homework, writing-based or mainly speaking: whatever we need to do to keep you or your child motivated.

* Sadly I am not able to write university or coursework essays FOR you! People do ask me to do this now and again and while I like to help in any way I can, writing other people's essays is fraud! I'm always very happy to offer sessions on study skills though and of course I can give a huge amount of help making what you've written yourself amazing. We can do a lot in a few hours so don't panic. Often it only needs that one great idea to make the words flow.
