This is how 2 referees rated Nicholas:
After leaving school (with A-levels in Mathematics, Further Mathematics and Physics) I studied at the University of York, graduating in 1994 with a BA in Mathematics. After working as a software engineer for a couple of years, I went to the University of Warwick where I completed an MSc in Mathematics, graduating in early 1998. I then stayed on at Warwick to do a PhD part-time in mathematics, specialising in knot theory and homological algebra, while also working as a software engineer. I finished the PhD in 2004 and since then have taught part-time at Warwick. I do occasional research in algebra and topology, and am currently in the latter stages of writing an undergraduate abstract algebra textbook.
I have taught mathematics at the University of Warwick for over ten years. At present I teach three lecture courses a year in the Mathematics and Economics departments: two first-year mathematics modules and a revision course for struggling third-year students. I am also personal tutor to about forty undergraduate mathematics students, supporting them through their degree programmes and helping with any academic or administrative problems they run into.
I have a Postgraduate Award in Technology Enhanced Learning, and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy, the national accreditation body for university-level teaching.
I view education as a collaborative endeavour between the teacher and the student, and generally try to tailor my teaching to the student's specific needs and preferred way of working.
