I am an engineer with a keen interest in maths and a real desire to make sure that we have talented, mathematically literate young people coming out of school.
I don’t have a masters degree in maths, and to be honest, I found A-level maths to be a real challenge. But the chances are that if you are reading this then that describes you too, and sometimes the best teacher is the one that understands the obstacles, not the one who flew through the course without finding any of it difficult
In all of my roles I have been responsible for training and tutoring employees and customers at all levels of knowledge and experience.
What I really want to get across is a thorough understanding of the subject, so that you can approach any problem – not just the ones that look like examples or exercises.
All too often students are thrown by a question that doesn’t exactly fit what they have been taught, and it’s not that they don’t know the techniques, they don’t see the link between them and the question.
Being an engineer is a great help with this because I use the maths that I learnt at school almost every day, so I can help you see that those boring, dusty methods actually have real world applications
