Personal Description:

Until 2014 I worked as a graduate teaching assistant in the Politics department at the University of Exeter while studying for a PhD in Sociology. I currently work as a personal tutor as well as giving some of my time to local community projects. I live in Totnes with my wife and two dogs.

Tutoring Experience:

From 2011 until 2014 I worked at the University of Exeter as a teaching assistant leading tutorials in American Politics (3 years), Comparative Politics (1 year) and the Grand Challenges summer programme (2 years). I normally led tutorial groups of approximately 15 students, but I also spent some of my time working with students one-to-one and marking essays and exams.

Tutoring Approach:

I focus on the student as much as the subject. It is important that all students have key study skills and writing skills, and these must be worked on at the same time as subject knowledge. I also recognise that different students learn in different ways, and so I am open to adapting my approach to suit each individual. I like to engage the student in the material and I encourage active discussion rather than simply lecturing.

I like to use a lot of real world examples to help my students to understand how their subjects fit into wider society. As well as focusing on exam preparation and the core curriculum I also like to make sure that the student understands the broader context of what they are learning. My teaching experience at university level means that I can go beyond the A-Level and GCSE curriculums to enliven the subjects and prepare my students for higher education.
