I have recently completed an MA from the University of Essex. I have a BA in History & Film Studies from Queen Mary, University of London, in which I achieved a 2:1. I also have A Levels in English Language and Literature (B) and History (A) as well as GCSE's in English (A*/A) and History (A).
I have extensive experience in essay writing at a variety of levels as well as extensive proof-reading experience, both of which I believe would make me a positive tutor for GCSE/ A Level and University level students, as I have had to write essays at all of these levels and understand both the planning, writing and finalising stages. For anyone who struggles with coursework of this nature, I believe I could be of help, as I have regularly assisted university students in their work whilst completing my own MA.
I am friendly and patient, both of which are essential qualities for a tutor. I am based in East London and close to the Central Line and would be willing to travel for appointments.
I first began tutoring whilst studying for my A Levels. During this time I tutored secondary and GCSE English, helping one child raise his coursework grade from a C to a B.
I have undertaken a number of voluntary placements in a variety of countries, most recently in Kenya, where I taught English and History in a school for internally displaced children. The limited resources available meant that I had to me creative with my teaching approach, often encouraging the children to be active participants, which also helped them remember what they had been taught.
Whilst at university, I undertook a mentoring qualification, part of which was assisting with academic work. I have helped undergraduates plan their essays, assisted with drafting and proof reading and suggested areas for improvement and clarification to help improve grades.
Having studied both of these subjects myself, I understand what a student has to do to achieve the best grades, as well as also understanding the pressure a student at any level can feel they are under or put themselves under. I have learned some of my own tips and tricks throughout my own studies that I would hope to pass on, including some of the books I found most helpful and the approaches to coursework and revision that I found worked best for me.
Thanks to my mentoring qualification, I have an understanding of different learning styles which I think will be a real asset to tutoring, as I understand that not every student can be taught the same way.
My focus is helping student not only to improve their grades, but to gain a better understanding of their subject, as a better understanding influences better grades. I find that being able to make the subject relevant to what a child knows or enjoys helps this. I would be able to assist with both coursework and exam based work, hopefully helping the student to not only achieve their best possible grade for their particular exam, but also helping to teach them some long term academic skills to take with them to the next stage of their studies.
