Craft and Design
From an early age I have had a keen interest in chess, which began at school. I very quickly became a part of Rugby Chess Club and played for their junior team. I gained a lot of match experience and regularly went to tournaments.
At University of Bath, I studied Maths & Music and didn't have the time to join a chess club. In my final year, when some time was available I joined Bath City Chess Club, it was here that my chess ability improved dramatically.
At the present time I captain Rugby A which play in Division 1 of the Coventry League with a current ECF rating of 158.
Every fortnight a give a quick 15 minute coaching session to the juniors about all sorts of topics from Basic endgames, to typical isloated queen's pawn positions to solid book openings depending on their styles.
I am relatively new to teaching chess on a private basis, however I have taught the captain of Rugby C for a session in which he was very pleased. He could not carry on however, because of financial difficulties. I also have an 8 year old student who is already very proficient in endgames, which I have introduced to him.
I have also had experience teaching the violin to students up to Grade 6 level. This began whilst I was studying for my A levels, so my teaching style has developed throughout this time.
I differ my approach depending on the student i.e, age, ability, how you best absorb/retain information etc.
As a general rule I teach using key positions that are fun to play from both sides of the board and where exact moves are necessary to improve accurate calculations. If players are more advanced then I choose more strategic content to improve knowledge of piece placement.
