Personal Description:

I am a native French speaker with 13 years’ experience teaching French to learners ranging from school pupils to university students and professionals. I hold a PhD and an MA in Modern French Literature, as well as an MA in translation. I am also an experienced working translator.

I am very fond of languages and eager to share my enthusiasm for French with learners of different levels. For example I have run successful intensive French courses for beginners aiming for practical skills in real life situations. At the other extreme, as a literature specialist I have helped students prepare French A Level exams.

Tutoring Experience:

I worked in the French department of Royal Holloway (University of London) for five years teaching both language and literature modules between 2003 and 2008. Between 2009 and 2012, I moved to France where I taught in an international high school (Lycée Saint-Denis, Loches) and a French business school (ESCEM, Tours). Since returning to the UK in 2012, I have been working as a translator and as a private French tutor both locally and through Skype. I have also run intensive French courses for the Ministry of Defence.

Tutoring Approach:

My approach depends on my students' aims and current level, as well as on their preferred learning method. I enjoy using diverse sources of language material from contemporary culture, ranging from books, to newspapers, radio and film clips. The teaching is always anchored to a specific target, and this involves learning vocabulary around a theme and building language skills related to it. For students preparing for an exam, I make sure they build greater confidence in their spoken and written skills by giving special attention to pronunciation and grammar.

Lessons needn't be tedious; they can and must be good fun as this helps learners remember things more clearly!
