I am currently a second year medical student at Imperial College London. I was born in the Ukraine but raised in the United Kingdom, allowing me to adapt to people of various backgrounds and ethnicities. I completed my GCSEs and A-levels in Gosforth Academy in Newcastle upon Tyne where I was also head boy in year 13. This was a great responsibility and allowed me to voice my and my peer’s views on improvements to our school, allowing us to feel comfortable in our learning environment. Currently my main interests include playing for Imperial Medicals Rugby Club, which takes up a lot of my time; reading and playing guitar and piano.
During year 12 I was part of a peer mentoring scheme where I would sit in on year 10 lessons and essentially act as a teaching assistant, answering student’s questions and helping the teacher with managing and controlling the students. This also involved giving one to one lessons in maths and science to students that were struggling with these subjects. This was a great experience and allowed me to develop how to explain complex concepts as simply as possible so that they could get to grips with what they were learning.
When teaching, I like to go through the contents from the textbook first, asking the student questions as I go and ensuring that they are familiar with the contents. I then go through textbook questions with them to allow them to consolidate their learning and finally have them answer exam questions to gain experience in answering questions under exam conditions. I then have them teach what they’ve learned to me to ensure that they know the contents and answer questions successfully.
